Why this matters in South Africa
South African food and beverage businesses operate on razor-thin margins with complex requirements: health certificates, liquor licences, staff scheduling, and POS systems that do not connect to accounting. A typical restaurant loses R15,000-R40,000 per month to operational inefficiencies from disconnected systems.
Compliance note: Food service businesses must hold a Certificate of Acceptability from the local municipality. Liquor licences are issued by provincial Liquor Authorities and renewed annually. Food manufacturing must comply with R638 food safety regulations under DAFF.
South African food and beverage operators face razor-thin margins, often losing up to R40,000 monthly due to fragmented systems that fail to reconcile ZAR transactions with operational communication. By connecting Yoco’s transaction data to CallHippo via middleware, you transform your POS into a proactive business intelligence hub. When a high-value transaction or a specific payment event occurs in Yoco, your management team receives an automated WhatsApp or voice alert through CallHippo, ensuring real-time oversight of revenue without manual checking. This workflow bridges the gap between your point-of-sale and your communication stack, allowing managers to instantly verify staff performance or address customer service queries while remaining compliant with POPIA data handling standards. By automating these data flows, you eliminate the administrative friction of manual reporting, allowing your team to focus on maintaining R638 food safety compliance and liquor licence standards rather than chasing disconnected financial data.

How to add Yoco to CallHippo
- 1
1. Create a free account on an automation platform like Make or Zapier, which serves as the essential middleware to bridge Yoco’s API with CallHippo’s webhook module. Ensure your account is set to a South African region to maintain local data residency standards as required by POPIA.
- 2
Log into your Yoco Business Portal and navigate to the 'Developer' section to generate your unique API Key and Secret. You will need these credentials to authorize the middleware to securely pull transaction data from your merchant account.
- 3
In your middleware platform, create a new scenario and select Yoco as the trigger app, choosing the "New Transaction" event. This allows the system to monitor your ZAR sales in real-time as they are processed through your card machine.
- 4
Authenticate the connection by pasting your Yoco API credentials into the middleware’s authorization field. Test the trigger by processing a small test transaction on your Yoco device to ensure the middleware successfully captures the payment data.
- 5
Add a filter step within your middleware to isolate specific transaction types or amounts that require immediate attention, such as large catering orders or voided transactions. This prevents your CallHippo dashboard from being flooded with unnecessary notifications, keeping your management focus sharp.
- 6
Select CallHippo as the action app in your middleware and choose the "Send WhatsApp Message" or "Send SMS" function. You will need to input your CallHippo API token, which can be found under the 'Integrations' tab within your CallHippo dashboard.
- 7
Map the transaction data—such as the customer name, timestamp, and ZAR amount—into the message template within the middleware. Ensure the message format is clear and concise so that your floor manager can instantly interpret the sale status without needing to log into the POS.
- 8
Activate the scenario and perform a final live test to verify that the Yoco transaction triggers the intended communication in CallHippo. Monitor the logs for the first 24 hours to ensure all data transfers remain compliant with your internal reporting and SARS record-keeping requirements.
