Why this matters in South Africa

South African food and beverage businesses operate on razor-thin margins with complex requirements: health certificates, liquor licences, staff scheduling, and POS systems that do not connect to accounting. A typical restaurant loses R15,000-R40,000 per month to operational inefficiencies from disconnected systems.

Compliance note: Food service businesses must hold a Certificate of Acceptability from the local municipality. Liquor licences are issued by provincial Liquor Authorities and renewed annually. Food manufacturing must comply with R638 food safety regulations under DAFF.

South African food and beverage operators lose up to R40,000 monthly due to manual reconciliation errors and fragmented sales data. By connecting PayFast to a Wix e-commerce storefront, businesses consolidate transaction data into a single ZAR-denominated stream, eliminating the manual entry of daily cash-ups. This integration ensures that every credit card, SnapScan, or Instant EFT payment is captured directly against the order, providing a clean audit trail for SARS compliance. While Wix and PayFast do not automate physical regulatory requirements like R638 food safety compliance or provincial liquor licence renewals, this digital bridge allows managers to focus on operational overhead rather than payment matching. By automating the flow of transaction data, you reduce the risk of POPIA-compliant data leakage and ensure that your online revenue accurately reflects your daily inventory depletion, directly addressing the thin margins inherent in the local hospitality sector.

How to add PayFast to Wix

  1. 1

    1. Log in to your Wix dashboard and navigate to the 'Accept Payments' tab within your site settings. Select 'See More Payment Options' to locate the 'Third-Party Credit/Debit Card Providers' section.

  2. 2

Choose 'PayFast' from the list of available providers to open the configuration window. Ensure your Wix site currency is set strictly to ZAR, as PayFast will reject transactions if the currency mismatch occurs.

  3. 3

Log in to your PayFast merchant dashboard in a separate browser tab to retrieve your unique Merchant ID and Merchant Key. These credentials act as the secure handshake between your Wix storefront and the PayFast payment gateway.

  4. 4

Copy your Merchant ID and Merchant Key from the PayFast dashboard and paste them into the corresponding fields in the Wix payment configuration window. Click 'Connect' to establish the secure API link between the two platforms.

  5. 5

Navigate to the 'Integration' settings within your PayFast dashboard to configure the Instant Transaction Notification (ITN) URL. Input your Wix site’s specific callback URL to ensure that PayFast sends real-time payment status updates back to your Wix order management system.

  6. 6

Enable the 'Test Mode' in your PayFast dashboard to conduct a dummy transaction using a test credit card. Verify that the order status in your Wix dashboard updates from 'Pending' to 'Paid' immediately upon successful completion of the test.

  7. 7

Once testing is verified, disable 'Test Mode' in the PayFast dashboard to begin accepting live ZAR payments from customers. Ensure your website’s privacy policy is updated to reflect that payment data is processed by PayFast in accordance with POPIA requirements.

  8. 8

Integrate your Wix order exports with your accounting software, such as Xero or Sage, to ensure that the PayFast transaction fees are reconciled correctly. This final step ensures your financial records remain accurate for SARS reporting and helps track the true profitability of your food and beverage operations.
